Use a profile in a task

A task that uses a profile follows it on every run, and the run's checks read it. This page shows how to choose a profile in a task, start a task from a profile, and what each run records about the profile it used.

Choose a profile in a task

The profile fields sit at the top of What to work from, both when you create a task and in the task's settings afterwards.

  • Templates that need a profile show the field straight away and won't save without it:
    • Client profile ("Choose the client profile this task writes for."): This week's posts for a client and Second version from client notes.
    • Product profile ("Choose the product profile this task writes about."): Launch announcement for your product, Release notes from what shipped and Directory listing for your product.
  • Any other task, including a custom one, can use a profile as an optional reference: click Add reference profile and choose a client profile, a product profile, or both.

Pick a profile from the list. Open profile opens it in a new tab, and the refresh button next to the list (Refresh profile list) loads profiles you created elsewhere without changing your choice. Choose No profile (or No product profile) to stop using one.

A task saved from a chat starts without a profile. Add one in the task's settings, under What to work from.

Create a profile from a task

If the profile you need doesn't exist yet, click New profile (or New product profile) next to the field:

  • Draft with AI drafts it from one source in a dialog over the task. When you save it, it is selected in the task.
  • Start from scratch opens the profile form in a dialog. Saving selects it in the task.
  • From a task template opens the profile-drafting template in a new tab. "After saving your profile, return here and refresh the list to select it." When it can, ConsoleX selects it in the original task for you.

Creating or choosing a profile doesn't save or run your task. Your unsaved instructions and materials stay as they were. See Create a profile for each method.

Start a task from a profile

You can also go the other way and start from the profile:

  • On the Profiles page, click Start a task with this profile on a profile's card. The template gallery opens with the profile shown at the top. The templates written for that kind of profile come first under Recommended, followed by every other template and Create a custom task. Whichever you pick opens with the profile already selected; for a template that doesn't need a profile, it is added as a reference. Click No profile at the top to start without it.
  • After you save a profile drafted with AI, and on the side of a profile's page, Start a task with this profile lists the templates that need this kind of profile. Each one opens with the profile selected.

Nothing is saved or run until you save the task.

What each run uses

When a run starts, it uses the profile's current version and records it. The run's Result tab shows which one, for example:

Written with Brightside Bakery's profile · version 2

If the profile has changed since, the line adds the current version, for example "(now version 3)". Click it to open the profile.

  • The run is told to follow the profile. A client task is asked to keep to the voice, words and off-limits topics, and to use only facts from the profile or its own material. A product task is asked to write only what the product profile says and to avoid anything listed under Claims not to make; the Private to you section is given as context, not as something to publish. The checks are how you see whether it did.
  • The checks read the same version. AI checks judge the result against that version of the profile, and its facts count as allowed sources. Rule checks still read only the result text. Checking the run again later uses the same version, so the verdict isn't affected by later edits. See Read run results and checks.
  • Changes reach later runs. When you save a new version, every task that uses the profile follows it from its next run. Runs that already finished keep their version.

Add the rules a run suggests

Runs of Second version from client notes apply the client's notes to your draft and suggest rules for the client's profile, "so the same note doesn't come back." They appear on the run's result under "Rules for … profile":

  • Click Add for each rule you agree with, Add all to take them all, or Dismiss for the ones you don't. "Nothing is added without your click."
  • Added rules go to Rules from client notes in a new version of the profile, and each one shows the run it came from. The suggestion then reads, for example, "Added in version 4". Every task that uses the profile follows the new rules from its next run.
  • If the task has no client profile yet, the rules have nowhere to go. Choose a profile in the task's settings first.

Product profiles don't receive suggested rules.

When a profile is missing

A task can't run without the profile it needs. If a task's profile was deleted, the field says "This task's profile was deleted. Choose another one, or the task can't run." Choose another profile and save the task.

To prevent this, ConsoleX doesn't let you delete a profile while tasks still use it. The profile's page lists those tasks under Used by.
