Save a Claude Code session as a task

When you've worked out a useful way to do something in Claude Code, save it for the next time. The method stays in a main Skill on your computer; ConsoleX keeps the delivery goal, run rules and checks. You review the draft before it becomes a task.

This is workflow A in the overview. If the task was already created in ConsoleX and you want Claude Code to execute it, follow workflow B's run steps; you do not need to save the session as another task.

First install and connect the ConsoleX plugin. Saving an agent session as a task requires a Pro or Max plan.

Prepare the draft in Claude Code

  1. Work through the task with Claude Code until you have a useful deliverable and clear requirements. You can save an ordinary session; it doesn't need to be running a ConsoleX task already.

  2. Type the save command yourself, optionally naming the task:

    /consolex:save Weekly research brief
  3. Claude Code chooses the main Skill that describes the method, or creates one if the session only used general Skills. If it needs to add your requirements to an existing Skill, it asks before changing it.

  4. Claude Code selects the actual deliverable from the session and prepares the review link. Open that link in your external browser, signed in to the same ConsoleX account.

Preparing the Skill and draft doesn't create a saved task. Rules about waiting for you, publishing or sending, and handling failed checks belong in the task's run rules.

Review and save in ConsoleX

Review each step:

  1. Name and delivery goal: describe what the task should deliver. Resolve any notes about missing or conflicting requirements.
  2. The Skill: read the main Skill and the list of copied files and other Skills used. This is a read-only copy for review; edit the original Skill in Claude Code when you want to change the method.
  3. Checks: keep, edit or remove the suggested acceptance criteria. A previous result is a reference, not proof that every suggestion is appropriate.
  4. Run rules and Save: confirm what can happen automatically, when to wait for you, and what to do after a failed check, then save.

The option to check the selected result is off by default. If you turn it on, inspect the full result preview and select the intended deliverable before saving. Saving alone doesn't run the task again or check the old result.

Use the saved task

Follow the add or start command shown after saving. You can use /consolex:add with the task's name or full task link to make it available on this computer, then invoke its /cx-… Skill, or use /consolex:start directly. See Run and check tasks.

A task whose method is a local Skill runs in its coding agent. Its task page shows where to run it and a start command. Keep the main Skill available on each computer where you want to use it.

Change the method or the checks later

  • Edit the original Skill to change how the agent works. ConsoleX keeps available version snapshots for review; it doesn't write changes back to your local Skill.
  • Edit the delivery goal and run rules in the task's settings.
  • Edit the acceptance criteria in the task's checks settings. Suggestions prompted by a changed Skill only take effect when you choose to add them.

Changing the Skill doesn't automatically change the saved criteria.

Common questions

What is sent to ConsoleX? The save includes available session requests, the selected result, model information, tool records and a text copy of the main Skill within size limits. Recognized credentials are masked. Review sensitive material before saving; masking may not catch every value. The draft shows which Skill files were copied and which were omitted.

The draft link expired. Unsaved external-session drafts expire after 24 hours. Return to the source session and run /consolex:save again to prepare a new one.

The wrong reply was selected. Check the result preview before opting into the initial check. Select the actual deliverable rather than a status reply or check report.

Can I change the Skill in the review form? The Skill is read-only there. Ask Claude Code to update the original, then prepare a new draft if you haven't saved the task yet.
